Taittinger Letter from Ian Fleming

Taittinger

In which movie has Champagne played the most important role ever made by mankind? If you ask me, I will answer without hesitation, "From Russia with love."

The representative playboy of the earth is "Her Majesty's intelligence agent" James Bond. Champagne always appears cool in the 007 movies, but the most important role Champagne played in movie history was in the second 007 movie, From Russia With Love (1963). ’ I guess.

A recent 007 movie promises to get you into irrelevant trouble in the first 10 minutes of its opening, only to come out with a high-tech weapon to get you out of trouble, but From Russia With Love "This is the movie" that competes with the talent of the director, the fun of the script, and the acting skills of the actors. I think it's the best of the series.

The story is, as usual, a war of spies between Russia and Britain. After obtaining a Russian code-breaker, Bond takes the Orient Express from Istanbul to London. At the Zagreb station in Yugoslavia on the way, a Russian killer disguised as a British officer comes in, but Bond, who does not notice the disguise, has dinner with the killer in the dining car.

Bond ordered the standard English menu, sole, and paired it with Taittinger's Comtes de Champagne, while the Russian ordered the same sole, the cheaper Italian red, Chianti.

Comtes de Champagne is the finest version of the prestigious Taittinger company.

Regular champagne mixes black and white grapes, but this uses only delicate white grapes. White champagne is called Blanc de Blancs (white of white) in wine terms, and Bond calls it so in the movie.

The bubbles are smoother than silk and pop in your mouth. Aromas of apple, white peach, and vanilla are mixed with the aroma of ground cashews, and Grace Kelly, who has been described as "intelligent sensuality," appears on the tongue.

On the other hand, the Chianti ordered by the assassin is DOCG, the highest classification under Italian wine law, but it is a wine for everyday consumption that costs around 1,000 yen. The scene where the assassin, who is trying to be a bit of a high-class man, orders Chianti, thinking it is the finest wine, symbolizes the poor Russia of the 1960s, when there were few things.

A cruel difference in living standards. The original author, Ian Fleming, who was famous for hating Russia, is dancing.

A Russian killer points a pistol at Bond who returned to the guest room. At that moment, Bond says haha. "Is that right? Red wine with the sole..."

I regret that I should have found out because British people wouldn't do such an unrefined combination, but Russians have a cool face. "Even if you know a lot about wine, you lose." This is the scene that wine lovers recognize as "the scene where Champagne played an important role".

Taittinger presented the original author, Ian Fleming, with a case of Comtes de Champagne 1953 as a reward for the "good performance" of Comtes de Champagne, which made the champagne famous.

Immediately after, a letter of thanks from Ian Fleming was displayed in the guest room of Taittinger (see photo). The text is as follows.

This letter is a must-longing for champagne lovers, 007 fans, and movie lovers around the world.

Japanese translation

Mr. Taittinger

Thank you for your wonderful letter of April 4th.

Please allow me to write a thank you note in English.

Thank you for sending James Bond Blanc de Blancs 1953.

I think it's a really nice champagne.

Unfortunately, James Bond is now in Japan and is in a pitiful situation where he can only drink sake.

I would like Bond to have Blanc de Blancs, but by the time I get back to England, all the bottles will be empty.

Empty bottles are so beautiful that Bond will use them to make lamps.

If you have a chance to travel near Reims in the future, please do not hesitate to visit your company and see the famous underground cellars.

Finally, I would like to express my gratitude once again, and I would like to express my sincere gratitude to this world-class champagne.

Perrier-Jouët

As a private owner, Perrier-Jouët has the largest collection of Art Nouveau works in the world.

In March 2009, when I received an invitation from the company to taste the world's oldest champagne (1825), which lies dormant in our underground cellar, I visited the guest house located across the Champagne Boulevard from the winery I visited

The interior furnishings are all works by Emile Gallé, who designed the bottle for the maison's top cuvee, Belle Epoque. The only thing that stood out was the stylish toilet bowl from Toto, a Japanese company.

Many of the small items such as lamps are made by Gallé Studio, and many of them are made by craftsmen and signed by Gallé, but furniture such as chairs, couches, and beds are made by Gallé himself.

The person from Perrier-Jouët, who guided me, said, "You are free to touch and sit on any of the works." . I was thrilled to think that I would be touching the furniture Galle touched 120 years later.

A few years after visiting Perrier-Jouët, there was an Art Nouveau exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum (commonly known as Tobi) in Ueno. One of the highlights was a chair by Gallé. Please."

The total valuation of Emile Galle's work in the Perrier-Jouët State Guest House would be in the billions of dollars. I am grateful and grateful to the same maison for letting me touch such a precious piece of art.

"Omotenashi" is not only Japanese culture. Champagne also had extraordinary "hospitality".

Ten years ago, I decided to go on a champagne tour for 6 days and 5 nights with a group of enthusiastic champagne lovers in Osaka. "I definitely want to go to my favorite salon," so I wrote to Mr. Didier Dupont, the family head of the salon, and asked for permission to visit.

On the day of the event, when we arrived at the salon in the village of Mesnil-sur-Oger, we were all very impressed by the huge letter S on the door, which we are used to seeing in photographs.

Furthermore, I cried when I saw the three big flags above the entrance. In the center was the European flag with 12 stars arranged in a circle on a blue background, on the right was the French tricolor flag, and on the left was the Hinomaru.

The moment I saw it, my back was full of goosebumps. Even though you are just a group of Otchan and Obachan from Osaka, you feel like "Prime Minister Shinzo Abe who visited France as a state guest". "This is hospitality. I'm going to be a salon fan for the rest of my life."

When you step through the door, you will see a white model of the Boeing 787 operated by JAL on international flights, and the main wing is signed by a Japanese official. This is because I used to run a salon in JAL's first class.

Around the house, there are ink writings of "Salon de la Motte tasting party", handwritten menus at the tasting venue "Asaba", hand-blown by Hiroshi Kojitani, a glass craftsman and passionate champagne lover. It is packed with items related to Japan, such as champagne coolers.

All of us were very impressed, saying, "This is the hospitality of the whole body."

Salon enthusiasts from various countries are supposed to visit Maison, and I am very impressed that it must be difficult to redecorate with works related to the countries of the visiting delegations each time.

The ultimate was a hanging scroll with a motif of a salon bottle. The 10 people who saw this were overjoyed, saying, "Oh, it's rare to find a hanging scroll in a salon."

While I was deeply moved, I also felt a slight sense of incongruity.

In the tasting room, I had plenty of not only sarongs but also drumotes. "Saryu Kaguya" on the upper right is "Salon Champagne" written in Chinese, and this hanging scroll was made by a Chinese painter.

When I was writing "Wine Quiz King", I noticed that I was making a question with the theme of the Chinese name of champagne It is interesting that Dom Pérignon is the ``Master of Piri Nio,'' and the priest and the nun are paired.)

At the same time as I felt refreshed after the discomfort was resolved, I felt the "robust hospitality" of the people involved in the salon who worked hard to decorate it believing it was made in Japan, and my feelings of gratitude grew even more. This hanging scroll is a treasure that the salon is proud of.
