Fields of Chapelle-Chambertin

Gevrey-Chambertin The village has the largest area in the Cote de Nuits district of Burgundy and nine Grands Crus (Grand Cru), the most of any Cote de Nuits.

One of these Grand Crus, Chapelle-Chambertin, is said to produce the most delicate wines among the Grand Crus of Gevrey-Chambertin, which tend to produce powerful, masculine wines.

This time, I would like to introduce such a Grand Cru, Chapelle Chambertin.

Map of Chapelle-Chambertin

Chapelle-Chambertin is a Grand Cru vineyard located in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin in the northern part of Cote de Nuits region of Burgundy. It covers an area of approximately 5.48 hectares and is located on a sunny, east-facing slope at an altitude of approximately 265 to 275 meters.

Across the national highway, it is adjacent to the Grand Cru Chambertin Clos de Beze on the upper western slope, and to the south to the Grand Cru Griotte Chambertin.

In Burgundy, where the summers are hot and the winters are cold, the semi-continental climate is hot, and the village of Gevrey-Chambertin is relatively cooler than other villages with Grand Cru vineyards, as it is located in the north. The soil in this region is clay-limestone, and the Grand Cru vineyards have brown soil with a thin topsoil, consisting of mud and gravel deposits.

Chapelle-Chambertin consists of two plot, En La Chapelle in the south and Les Gémaux in the north. The soil on the En-la-Chapelle side is pebbly and calcareous, while the soil on the Les Gémauds side is deeply clayey with some differences.

The name Chapelle-Chambertin comes from the chapel (chapel = chapel in French) of the Abbey of Bèze, built in 1155. The chapel no longer exists as it was destroyed during the French Revolution in 1789.

Wine characteristics

AOC certified in 1937, Chapelle Chambertin is a red wine made from Pinot Noir.

Chapelle-Chambertin is described as the lightest and most delicate of the Grand Cru wines from the village of Gevrey-Chambertin.

However, since it is only in the grand crus of this village, there is no difference that it is a wine with the potential for long-term aging.

Recently, some producers have been producing wines with a powerful style. They have a rich aroma, a smooth texture, elegant fruitiness, and a complex, long finish. They can be aged for at least five years before they are ready to Ready to Drink, and for about 20 years if they are from a good vintage.
